About Roberta Rettner


Roberta Rettner is the Director of American Ways & Language. While traveling in Asia in 1985, Ms. Rettner conceived the idea for the cross-cultural communications consulting firm, which she was to found in 1987. There she recognized the urgent need for global professionals to achieve fluency in American English and advanced competency in international business ways and social customs.

Back in the United States, the concept broadened beyond Asian expatriates to encompass a client base from Europe, South America, the Middle East, Australia and now, Americans seeking to do business globally. Ms. Rettner regularly utilizes skills learned as training coordinator, journalist, editor and speechwriter. Also valuable have been her City University and Polytechnic University faculty teaching of communications skills, grammar, public speaking, and writing. She holds master degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Utah and a baccalaureate from New York University.

She has given presentations at organizations such as Japanese Associations of Language Teachers (JALT), Mokichi Okada Association (MOA), American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Her articles on learning and American culture have appeared in CrissCross, Chosun llbo, and France-Amérique. She headed ASTD's International special interest group for metropolitan New York form 1993 to 1998 and has been active in the Financial Women's Associations of New York since 1989. In October, "Preparation for Overseas Assignments: Is It Good Enough Now?" was her topic as part of a special focus at the PAC 2 language conference in Seoul, S. Korea.
