History Of The Beginning Of Sign Language

Sign language is basically the youngest language we have in our world nowadays. This language started on the early part of the 18th century because of Charles-Michel de l’pe, a priest who was based in France. Charles-Michel de l’pe had a neighbor who had two deaf daughters. He was looking for a way to bring the two deaf daughters to be recognized by people and become more mainstream. You should know though that it was not only Charles-Michel de l’pe who was interested to find a way to communicate with deaf people. However, what made him different from those who are in the same field is that he did not see deafness as a curse. He saw it as a disability unlike other people from that time who saw being deaf as a curse.

During the time of Charles-Michel de l’pe, deaf people were forced to read the lips of normal people so that they can fully understand what those people were saying. Furthermore, in schools, using signs to communicate with other people were not allowed. Charles-Michel de l’pe was different because he allowed deaf people to become more mainstream and to not conform with what the society was telling them to do. He gave a humane treatment to deaf people who wish to learn how to communicate using signs.
